Most families spend weeks preparing for a new dog and almost no time preparing for the first 48 hours specifically — even though that short window sets the pattern for almost everything that follows: where the dog sleeps, how it reacts to being left alone, what it thinks the house rules are, and how much structure it expects from you.
The instinct is to let a new dog meet everyone, explore everywhere, and get as much affection as possible on day one. Do less than that. A new environment is already a lot to process; add unrestricted access and a stream of visitors and most dogs either shut down or become overstimulated in ways that look like "settling in" but aren't. Quiet, low-traffic, and boring is the right target for day one.
Furniture, bedrooms, food-begging, who gets attention on demand — decide these before the dog arrives, not after a habit has already formed. Dogs don't distinguish between "just for now" and "the rule." Whatever is allowed in the first 48 hours is what the dog will assume is permanent, and reversing an accidentally-granted privilege later is far harder than never granting it.
Where the dog sleeps on night one is very likely where it will expect to sleep from now on. If a crate, pen, or a specific room is the long-term plan, start there immediately rather than easing in with something temporary. The transition is harder to make later, after the dog has already decided otherwise.
The first two days are an evaluation window, whether you treat them that way or not. How the dog handles being alone for ten minutes, how it responds to the crate, how it reacts to the leash — all of this is information you'll use for the following weeks. Pay attention instead of pushing through it.
The dogs who struggle most in month two are almost always the ones who were allowed to set their own rules in week one.
