Pulling is one of the most searched dog behavior problems for a simple reason: almost every owner has tried to fix it, and almost every fix works for about a week. The reason it keeps coming back isn't a training gap — it's that most fixes never touch the actual mechanism keeping the pulling alive.
A dog pulls, the leash goes tight, and — critically — the dog still moves forward. From the dog's perspective, pulling is a strategy that gets results. Every walk where forward motion continues while the leash is tight is a rehearsal of that strategy, regardless of what equipment is on the dog or what the owner says.
Front-clip harnesses, head halters, and no-pull harnesses all change the physics of pulling — they don't change the dog's underlying association between tight leash and getting where it wants to go. Many dogs simply learn to pull differently against new equipment rather than stop pulling altogether. Gear can support training; it isn't a replacement for it.
Reliable loose-leash walking comes from consistency in one specific rule: tight leash means forward motion stops, every time, for the entire walk — not just during "training sessions." The moment the leash slackens, motion resumes. This has to be applied by everyone who walks the dog, every walk, or the dog simply learns the rule is optional depending on who's holding the leash.
Some pulling is genuinely about arousal and under-exercised drive rather than a simple leash-mechanics problem — a dog with unmet mental or physical needs will pull toward anything more interesting than a slow walk next to a human. In those cases, the walk itself needs to change (structured sniffing time, decompression walks, more physical outlet) before leash mechanics training will hold.
Leash pulling is almost always evaluated as part of our general obedience programs, because it's rarely an isolated issue — it usually reflects how a dog handles structure and impulse control more broadly. Fixing the leash fixes the leash. Fixing the dog's relationship with structure fixes the leash and a dozen other things at once.
