Destroyed doorframes, non-stop barking, and accidents that only happen when you're gone all get labeled "separation anxiety," but genuine separation anxiety is a specific panic response to being alone — not general misbehavior that happens to occur while unsupervised. Getting the diagnosis right changes everything about the fix.
A bored dog chews, digs, or barks intermittently and is otherwise fine. A dog with genuine separation anxiety shows panic specifically tied to the owner's departure: pacing and vocalizing that starts before you've even left (often triggered by pre-departure cues like picking up keys), destruction concentrated at exit points like doors and windows, drooling, and behavior that often peaks in the first 15-30 minutes rather than building gradually from boredom over hours.
Unlike a puppy protesting a crate, a dog in a genuine anxiety state doesn't habituate to being left alone through repeated full-length exposure — repeated full-intensity panic often reinforces the panic response rather than resolving it. This is one of the few areas in dog training where "push through it" reliably makes things worse, not better.
The actual fix is systematic desensitization: leaving for durations short enough that the dog never crosses into a panic state, then very gradually extending that duration over days or weeks — sometimes starting with departures as short as a few seconds. This is slow, unglamorous, and works precisely because it never asks the dog to tolerate more than it can currently handle.
Because pre-departure cues (keys, shoes, a specific bag) often trigger the anxiety before you've even left, practicing those cues without following through with an actual departure — picking up keys and sitting back down, repeatedly, at random times — reduces their power to predict abandonment.
Moderate to severe separation anxiety, especially with self-injury risk (dogs that injure themselves trying to escape crates or rooms), often needs professional structuring of the desensitization plan and sometimes veterinary behavioral support alongside training — this is not a "just be patient" situation for every dog.
